THIBODAUX – The No. 24 Nicholls Colonels clinched their first-ever Southland Conference Championship on Saturday by defeating the McNeese State Cowboys, 39-26 at John L. Guidry Stadium.  The Colonels will now advance to the Division 1-AA playoffs next week as the conference champion, based on their 32-29 overtime victory over then fifth-ranked Texas State.

“Phenomenal,” commented head coach Jay Thomas.  “Your wildest dreams coming true.  Our guys overcame adversity . . . that’s the biggest thing.  They stared it down.  With everything that has happened, not only in the past, but just this year . . . losing two games earlier in the season to the hurricanes and starting off conference play 0-1, we were able to come back, focus on football and win the conference title.  It’s just unbelievable.

“I can’t say enough about the senior leadership on this year’s team.  It’s been awesome to see them lead the team through everything that we have endured.  They have truly made it a storybook ending.”
