Trovon Reed returned as one of Louisiana's top college prospects ("All-American ability") after helping lead the Thibodaux Tigers to ten wins, a district championship (their first since 1992) and a quarterfinal playoff run in 2008. The 6-foot, 180 lb. senior was welcomed back as the team's starting quarterback in 2009 and after four sensational games to start the season (3-1), Reed injured his left knee in the South Terrebonne game. He missed the next four games, and his Tiger team was just 2-3 in his absence including the game at S.T. that he missed most of. Trovon returned to the playing field in the regular season finale and led Thibodaux to a big win over St. Augustine, 31-14.
The Tigers finished the 2009 regular season with a 6-4 mark, 3-3 in district play, and were one of five teams in District 7-AAAAA to earn a playoff spot. The Thibodaux faithful turned out in big numbers on a chilly Friday night in Lafayette where the Fighting Tigers defeated St. Thomas More in overtime of a first round playoff thriller. The Tigers then hosted and defeated St. Paul's of Covington (who were 10-1 entering the game) before going back on the road and falling to the #1 ranked West Monroe Rebels in the 5-A quarterfinals. Afterwards, Coach Lorio said, "We were regional champs . . . a great accomplishment by our kids. These seniors won four playoff games in two years after not winning one in 16 years. We had opportunities, and I love the effort. We beat two district champs to be regional champs, but sometimes the other team has too much firepower."
Coach Dennis Lorio is 61-24 in seven seasons as the head ball coach at Thibodaux High. His Tigers have played in 18 postseason games, winning 14 of them; most were at home where they are nearly perfect (11-1). Lorio-led Tiger teams are a respectable 3-3 in road playoff games.
The 2009 THS roster included 19 seniors: Joshua Arceneaux, Brad Babin, Leyonte Brumfield, Michael Cook, Brandon Cortez, Dylan Douglas, Brandon Duncan, Chad Fletcher, Trenton Francis, Galyon Gaudet, Karmichael Green, Robert Green, Chris Hawkins, Tyler Jenkins, Ryan Johnson, Javonti Knockum, Drew Loupe, Trovon Reed and Drew Williamson.
Reed was the state's No. 1 rated prep football recruit by season's end, according to ESPN. He chose the Friday morning before the St. Paul's playoff game to announce that he would sign with the Auburn Tigers in February and play his college football at the Alabama school. At the time of the signing, Rivals.com had Reed rated at the No. 5 wide receiver coming out of high school. He was ranked No. 9 by ESPN and No. 11 by Scout. In at least one internet report, it was stated that, "In the end, Reed chose Auburn over LSU and Oregon." He will continue to be a Tiger after his glory days in Thibodaux. Just not the Tiger that local fans (most of whom support LSU) would have liked him to be.
